Detta är vad RS 230 säger om dokumentationskravet för revisorer. Det är väldigt viktigt att den planering, granskning och rapportering som utförs dokumenteras. En utomstående ska kunna följa arbetets gång och förstå hur revisorn kom fram till sina slutsatser genom att läsa dokumentationen. Med dokumentation menas, enligt RS 230, det material (de arbetspapper) som upprättats av och för revisorn eller som revisorn inhämtat och bevarat i samband med att revisionen utförts. Arbetspapper kan vara information lagrad på papper, film, elektroniska media eller andra media.

Som nybliven revisorsassistent är det extra viktigt att vara oerhört tydlig i dokumentationen och beskriva exakt vad som gjorts och vad som var syftet med granskningen. I början är arbetet en slags utbildning och det är därför viktigt att din granskningsledare förstår exakt vad du har gjort, vilka dokument du har granskat och vem du har intervjuat etc. Och viktigast av allt – skriv en slutsats för varje granskningspunkt! Utan en slutsats säger egentligen inte granskningen någonting. Det är slutsatsen som visar vad du kom fram till och varför du tycker att exempelvis en redovisningen av en balanspost kan accepteras. I början kan det kännas svårt att skriva slutsatser eftersom du tycker att allt är nytt och att du inte vet om du har dragit rätt slutsats eller inte. Men oroa dig inte för det! Din granskningsledare kommer att gå igenom ditt utförda arbete och dina slutsatser och ge dig feedback om något inte är helt rätt eller behöver utredas ytterligare. Det viktiga är att våga dra en slutsats eftersom du då tvingas analysera ditt utförda arbete och får en större förståelse för vad syftet med granskningen var.

För att din granskningsledare ska förstå vilken granskning du har gjort och hur du har kommit fram till dina slutsatser är det väldigt viktigt att det finns tydliga referenser mellan de olika dokumenten i årsakten. Med tydliga referenser går det lätt att följa arbetet och det blir en röd tråd genom hela revisionen. För att möjliggöra referering mellan dokument krävs någon typ av indexering på varje dokument som sparas i årsakten. Hur denna ser ut beror ofta på vilket revisionsprogram som används och på den enskilda byrån. Korsreferenser mellan dokument används för att det ska gå snabbt och lätt att hitta i dokumentationen och för att säkerställa att allt som finns i årsakten är relevant för revisionen. Det ska inte finnas några inte indexerade och refererade arbetspapper i årsakten.
